Engineering (Manufacturing Engineering)

Our Manufacturing Engineering HND covers both traditional and contemporary areas of knowledge. Alongside business knowledge that will allow you to manage effectively, you’ll also acquire a well-rounded understanding of multiple aspects of engineering. Additionally, you’ll understand manufacturing processes and technology.

Our industry focused HND allows you to meet employer needs, regardless of your career aims. Our selection of modules goes beyond the basics; you’ll broaden your practical understanding of manufacturing and engineering, conduct your own research study and explore emerging practices such as lean manufacturing. In addition to the knowledge gained, put your theory into practice through our research and engineering projects. If you are not already in employment, we’ll also support you with your work placement, with the end goal of you moving into relevant employment after studying.

  • You will be equipped with the essential qualities of an engineer, including integrity and regard for cost and sustainability, as they apply to a range of roles and responsibilities within the sector, such as engineering technician, manufacturing engineer or production engineer.
  • This programme will enable progression to top-up degree (typically 1 year full time), by supporting the development of academic study skills and the selection of appropriate units for study during the second year.
  • What makes this full time HND special is the teaching of practical engineering skills in mechanical and electrical/electronic engineering.
  • A further strength of this programme is the work placement sandwiched between year one and two. This will develop job seeking skills such as locating vacancies, CV writing and interview techniques. In addition, it aims to enhance your employability skills.
  • Once you have achieved this qualification you meet the academic requirements for the Engineering Council’s Engineering Technician Standard (EngTech), however it does not afford you the accreditation.
  • Studying at Leeds City College will offer individual support due to small class sizes.
  • This programme offers the opportunity to explore the application of theoretical knowledge through project work and research.

The assessments are scheduled so that deadline clashes are minimised and the main assessment mechanisms are:

  • Assignments (tasks include maths problems, presentations, essays or reports)
  • Project work
  • A minimal quantity of exams
