Degree-awarding powers usher in exciting new era

‘A momentous occasion.’

That is how our Dean of Higher Education has described the granting of full degree-awarding powers to University Centre Leeds during what promises to be a landmark year.

The change, which took effect in December after being announced earlier last year, is a recognition of our ability to deliver quality higher education that meets rigorous standards.

The new status means we can offer, for the first-time, three-year bachelor’s degrees while also validating our ‘top-up’ options, for foundation degrees, ourselves.

It also means we can now start designing and awarding our own degrees, tailored to meet the needs of students and industry – all in the same year that we’ll be moving to a new replacement campus.

Dean of Higher Education, Rebecca Fores said: “Being able to offer our new degree provision from our new campus at Mabgate, which is due to open this September, truly marks a momentous occasion for our institution, staff and students.

“Having degree-awarding powers allows our learners to more easily compare our offer against those of our competitors.

“We are currently in the process of redesigning our curriculum and are looking forward to offering full three-year honours programmes across our provision from September 2025.

“This will include some existing courses that we were delivering through a foundation degree plus top-up model, and which we have now developed into full BSc (Hons) or BA (Hons) degree programmes.

“And we’ll also be offering some brand-new courses - this is such an exciting time for our students, both current and prospective!”

Our new five storey building at Mabgate, which will be kitted out with state-of-the-art facilities, is part of a wider £27m development that will also see a replacement  building opened for Leeds City College’s Enfield Centre.
