Timea Edwards
Course Studied: FD Biomedical Sciences and Top-up
For many, the path to a career in science is a straight line. For Timea Edwards, it has been a journey of reinvention, resilience, and strategic academic progression at University Centre Leeds.
A Structured Path to Success
Timea’s academic journey is a testament to the power of modular learning. Having successfully completed her Foundation Degree in Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, she is now currently studying for her Level 6 Top-up degree in the same field.
While a Top-up year is typically completed in one year of full-time study, Timea is completing hers on a part-time basis. This flexibility has been vital, allowing her to balance the final stage of her degree with her "special circumstances" as a parent and a working professional.
Overcoming the Pandemic "Perfect Storm"
Timea joined the program as a mature student with English as her second language and a background in horticulture. Her journey began during the height of the pandemic—a time when her youngest child was only one and her eldest was nine.
"Starting university while homeschooling four children during lockdown was a massive challenge," Timea says. "But I made my transition into Biomedical science my number one priority."
The UC Leeds Advantage
Timea credits much of her success to the unique environment at University Centre Leeds. The structure of the course allowed her to find her footing during the Foundation years before tackling the Level 6 Top-up.
- Small Group Focus: The intimate class sizes meant she wasn't just a face in a crowd; she had a direct line to her tutors.
- Proactive Support: "You can approach the teachers with any problem, big or small," she explains. "Doing the formative assignments is essential because that’s where you get the feedback that helps you ace the final submission."
From Theory to Career: The CV Transformation
The most tangible result of Timea’s dedication has been her career shift. While completing her studies, she took on a five-week placement as a Lab Technician within the department, working four hours a day. This experience was the "missing piece" on her CV.
Despite still being a student, Timea’s combination of the Foundation degree and hands-on lab experience made her an immediate standout in the job market. She applied for three lab roles and was called back for interviews for all three. Today, she is successfully working in a laboratory while completing her Level 6 Top-up, proving that it is possible to balance a "full-time" professional life with part-time higher education.
Timea’s Advice for Future Students
- Prioritise Experience: "Even the smallest experience makes a big difference. Without that lab placement, I wouldn't have made it to the interview stage."
- Consistency: Turn up every day, do the weekly work, and never skip the formative tasks.
- Self-Care: "Focus on what you need to do, but clear a time for yourself. Do not sacrifice your evening rest.”
