Course Studied: FD Sport Performance and Exercise

When Christos Tzelis enrolled on the Sport Performance and Exercise course at University Centre Leeds, he already knew he loved racing. What he didn’t yet know was just how far that passion would take him.

In just a few years after starting running and cycling in his late teens, Christos has risen from a complete newcomer to one of the most exciting young endurance athletes in the UK. After qualifying to represent Team GB in 2025, he travelled to Spain to compete at the World Duathlon Age Group Championships in Pontevedra - and returned as both his age-group champion and the fastest athlete across the entire field.

That achievement followed another standout season the year before, when he also represented Team GB and won the overall title at the European Duathlon Age Group Championships, confirming him as a genuine international talent.

Christos credits much of his rapid development to what he’s learning on his degree. The Sport Performance and Exercise course closely mirrors the challenges he faces in training and competition - from how the body produces energy to how athletes make decisions under pressure.

“The way we study how elite athletes think before and during competition really resonates with me,” he explains. “The loop theory module stood out because it showed how fast decision-making can change the outcome of a race. I find I can take what I learn in lectures and apply it straight to my own racing.”

That combination of academic understanding and elite-level training is already paying off. Christos has posted remarkable times, including a 5K of 14:28, a sub-30-minute 10K, and a VO₂ max of 77, placing him among the most aerobically powerful endurance athletes in his age group.

Alongside his international success, Christos has been collecting wins and records across the UK, regularly competing (and winning) against far more experienced athletes. Recent highlights include:

  • Winner – Ilkley Triathlon 2024
  • Winner – Bramham Park Duathlon 2024
  • Winner – Tadcaster Triathlon 2024
  • Winner – Doncaster 10K 2023
  • Otley Hill Climb – Junior Record Holder
  • Ilkley Incline Record Holder (breaking a record that had stood since 2004)
  • 1st Junior – Harrogate Nova Road Race 2023
  • 2nd Overall – YBC Crits E123 Race

These performances show an athlete who is no longer just developing - but consistently delivering at the highest levels of age-group and open competition.

With international titles, national wins, and a rapidly growing profile, Christos is now setting his sights on the next step: turning professional in duathlon and triathlon. He is also beginning to look for sponsorship to support his training and competition as he moves into elite racing.

“For me, this is just the beginning,” he says. “University Centre Leeds has given me the tools to understand how to train smarter, race better, and keep improving. I’m excited to see how far I can go.”

From late starter to world champion, Christos Tzelis is proving what’s possible when talent, hard work, and the right education come together.
