From mature student to the Bar: Cameron Lee’s journey back into education
For many adults, the idea of returning to education can feel daunting - especially when life is already full of responsibilities. Cameron Lee knows this better than most. A mature student and a single father, Cameron’s route back into learning was not straightforward, but it has become the foundation for a remarkable journey from further education to university, postgraduate study and a future career in law.
“I was quite far removed from any form of academia,” Cameron says. “So going back into studies as a mature student seemed daunting. But with the help of the tutors and my cohort, that was soon overcome and I wasn’t the only one.”
After beginning his learning journey at Leeds City College, Cameron progressed to the LLB (Hons) Law degree at University Centre Leeds (UC Leeds). What he found there went far beyond lectures and exams.
“I had a very positive experience while studying at UC Leeds. The tutors were supportive and encouraging, and there were plenty of opportunities for you to follow your interests alongside studying.”
Those opportunities allowed Cameron to build not only academic knowledge, but also confidence and professional skills. While studying law, he established a Law Society and was elected President, securing funding for trips and hosting meetings with legal representatives. He was also elected Higher Education Officer for the Student Union and served as a student governor - experiences that helped him develop leadership, organisation and public speaking skills.
“These opportunities were a fantastic experience which led to real-life skill sets that can be applied in the workforce.”
As a mature student with family commitments, flexibility and understanding were essential. Cameron found this at both Leeds City College and UC Leeds.
“I was also a single father, and the university could not have been more supportive in understanding my needs and being flexible where it was needed. The tutors were empathetic, understanding and supportive, but they also helped you push yourself and encouraged you to use the potential they saw in you.”
Cameron’s academic interests in human rights law, international law and administrative law helped shape his ambition and his future direction. With the support of his tutors, he not only completed his degree, but excelled, achieving a First-Class Honours degree and receiving the Outstanding Achievement Award.
That success opened doors to postgraduate studies. Cameron explains. “I am currently on the Barristers Training Course and doing a Masters of Law, and I won a part scholarship for my postgrad.”
More than qualifications, Cameron says his time at UC Leeds gave him something even more powerful: belief.
“It gave me the confidence I needed to believe in myself and progress through challenges. It helped me develop a skill set in many areas - from research and public speaking to trusting my judgement and building self-confidence. All of these are prerequisites in the career I wish to pursue.”
For adults considering a return to learning, Cameron understands the fear, the doubt and the pressure. His message is simple, honest and hard-won.
“Just keep going. Even though at some points it seems a lot, assignments, exams, revision- just keep going. Before you know it, you’re graduating and moving on to the next step. But most importantly, remember to have fun and enjoy the experience. It’s over before you know it.”
From Leeds City College to University Centre Leeds, from undergraduate study to postgraduate training for the Bar, Cameron’s journey shows what can happen when opportunity meets determination.
“Believe in yourself,” he says. “Everyone starts somewhere and this is the first step to achieving your ambitions. Do today what tomorrow you will thank you for.”
