Graduation ceremonies are a rite of passage that, for many, Covid-19 quashed. Not wanting their students to miss out on such an educational milestone, University Centre Leeds recently hosted two graduation events for those who could not receive their degree formally the first time around. Over two sunny days at Leeds Conservatoire, on Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 July, the graduates gathered in the upstairs auditorium to formally receive their degrees. After the ceremonies were complete and the assembled cohort had settled into the celebrations, some of the graduating students reflected on their experiences.
Oksana Rybak, Masters in Biosciences
“It has been a great experience, with so many nice people, a friendly department and lecturers who are interesting and helpful – special thanks go to Annie, Chris and Mikaela. University Centre Leeds feels like a small family, and I am proud to be a part of it.”
Ryan Whiteley, BA (Hons) Computer Games:
“The graduation was great – I appreciated the crowd participation and the fact that there was a pause after each individual certificate was given so that family members could take photos. I will actually be returning as a teacher on the course.”
Both ceremonies saw speeches from Luminate’s Deputy CEO, Bill Jones, and Luminate’s Chair of Governors, Shaid Mahmood. Staff members were equally happy to see students able to formally collect their certificates and enjoy the graduation process.
