University Centre Leeds students at Xenia hotel, in norther Greece

A Greek adventure for travel and tourism management students

Students from University Centre Leeds have been gaining first-hand experience of the tourism sector in Greece.

Four management students headed off to Ouranoupolis, on the Halkidiki peninsula, on 6 June for a two-week learning adventure.

The trip was made possible through Erasmus+, the EU programme which supports education, training, youth and sport in Europe.

For the University Centre Leeds students this has involved working for one of the PAP Corp’s hotels, Xania, in a traditional seaside resort.

Experiencing a variety of roles – and a different culture

The learners were briefed on their duties by the hotel management team before starting their placement, and undertook a variety of tasks during their stay. Their work included serving meals and helping at the hotel’s bar and beach bar.

HE Lecturer, Leah Hughes, who accompanied the students for the first week of the trip, said: “Each of our learners were given a rota to ensure they experienced different duties while on the placement.

“While I was there I took them out into the resort, so they could see the more relaxed and slower-paced Greek way of life.

“They also tried a variety of Greek food and learned some basic Greek, as they were to be working in the hotel with local employees, as well as people from other countries.

“All of our learners worked hard and made the most of this opportunity, and we have received excellent feedback from the hotel.”

Three of the participating students have just finished their Foundation Degree in Travel and Aviation, while the other has completed theirs in Business, Enterprise and Management.
