The team from Flutter UK & Ireland who took part in the 2023 Women in Leadership programme at University Centre Leeds

‘Truly motivational’ – students inspired by stories of female success

Successful entrepreneurs, civil servants and business leaders have been sharing their experiences with our students.

The organisers of our 2023 Women in Leadership programme, which ran over three weeks, have hailed it as ‘the best yet’.

The annual event is held each spring to let students hear directly from business leaders about their life and career paths, and pitch questions to them.

This year’s programme included three lunchtime presentations – featuring speakers from Flutter UK & Ireland, HMRC and RSM UK –  that were packed with insights and inspirational stories.

Top tips on how to tackle imposter syndrome and other challenges

Deputy Head of Business, Leadership and Management, Sarah Cook, said: “We had an exciting lineup of inspiring speakers, all of whom told their own personal stories of leadership and career success.

“What was particularly beneficial to the students was the fact that each of the speakers shared recommendations and guidance based upon their own experiences. It was truly motivational and the students all responded very positively, especially about careers in the civil service and entertainment industries.

“We had an excellent level of attendance, which included students from across the various curriculum areas at the University Centre.”

The subjects covered included how to identify and deal with imposter syndrome, the value of transferable skills and being willing to take on new challenges, and how successful career paths do not have to follow straight lines.

Zoe Morton, an Associate Director from RSM UK, also spoke about the importance of shouting about your leadership qualities when you are striving to secure a dream job.
