About the course
Suited to those who may not meet the entry requirements for the full LLB Hons degree, our foundation year consists of legal modules that help you enhance your confidence, knowledge and academic skills.
You will gain an understanding of legal education in the United Kingdom by studying compulsory and optional modules - allowing you to choose your route and specialist area of study whilst gaining a qualifying law degree.
Regardless of your chosen route, you will be assessed on the skills, attributes and competencies relevant to your chosen field of study.
Available routes include:
Route A: Practical Legal Studies
Enhance your employability by developing practical skills required for the practice of law. This route provides you with a step up to various training programmes and qualifications, including the Solicitors Qualifying examination, the Legal Practice course, the CILEX Professional qualification and the Bar Practice Training course.
Route B: Law and Criminal Studies
This route of study is designed for those wanting an alternative career outside of the traditional legal qualification routes, including civil service, policing and the probation service. You will further your knowledge and understanding of victimology; working with vulnerable people; policing and social control; the psychology of crime; and working with offending behaviour.
This Foundation Year course is validated by Luminate Education Group
The LLB (Hons) course is validated by The Open University.

Introduction to Criminal Law and Justice (20 credits)
Explore the idea of criminal liability in regards to criminal acts, the criminal mind and criminal justice.
Family Law (20 credits)
This module will introduce you to the key concepts of family law including mariage, divorce and domestic violence.
Legal Obligations (20 credits)
Learn the key concepts of employment law, negligence and contract law.
English Legal Systems (20 credits)
Understand the constructs of the English legal system whilst seeing how they are applied within the court structure.
Academic Skills (20 credits)
You will gain the academic skills required for studying on an LLB programme and for practice within a legal profession.
Contemporary Legal Project (20 credits)
Develop your understanding of legal research and how to prepare, plan and conduct research whilst answering a question on one of four topics: family law, criminal law, tort law and contract law.

Year 1 (Level 4)
Legal Research and Ethics (20 credits)Develop your understanding of legal research theory and philosophy of law, whilst exploring legal research and learning how to use various research tools.
English Legal Systems (20 credits)
Delve into the legal system whilst exploring your own personal practice. Become familiar with the rules, people, concepts and institutions that form the English legal system.
Criminal Law (20 credits)
Study key defences relating to murder, manslaughter and theft offences, whilst exploring the theories of criminal law and its place in modern society.
Public Law and Human Rights (20 credits)
Develop your knowledge on the nature, structure and operation of the British constitution, whilst considering the relationship between legislation, executive and the judiciary.
Academic Skills (20 credits)
In this module, you will be introduced to academic writing standards, the relevance of using reliable information sources and the importance of referencing other people’s work. Furthermore, the module will identify the skills and techniques you will require in order to complete various methods of formative and summative assessments that you will encounter throughout your degree.
Tort Law (20 credits)
Learn about the law of torts, how it protects reputation and personal integrity and what is meant by defamation and trespass to the person.
Year 2 (Level 5)
By the end of level 5 in semester 1, you will have chosen the optional module route that will propel you towards your future career. Each route has set compulsory modules consisting of:
Compulsory modules:
Contract Law (20 credits)Develop your understanding of legal contract requirements and recognise the different sections needed for a variety of contracts.
Equity and Trusts (20 credits)
Understand the importance of trusts and explore the principles of equity and trusts. This module is connected to the Wills and Probate module in the Practical Legal Studies route.
Land Law (20 credits)
Gain an introduction to land law, real property law and the law relating to easements and covenants. This module feeds into the Practice of Property module in the Practical Legal Studies route.
Practical Legal Studies route:
Business Law and Practice (20 credits)
Relating to the Contract Law module, this unit allows you to gain an insight into the principles of business law and practice.
Wills and Probate (20 credits)
Understand, analyse and synthesise the principles of wills and probate. As this is linked with the Equity and Trusts module, specific aspects already learnt in that module will also be considered.
Property in Practice (20 credits)
Explore the principles of property in practice, whilst building on content learnt in the Land Law module.
Law and Criminal Studies route:
Youth Crime and Justice (20 credits)
Discover the key theories relating to youth crime and justice, alongside patterns of youth offending and the reasons behind it. Designed to enhance your understanding of the Criminal Justice module, this unit focuses on the topic of young children and youths.
Psychology and Crime (20 credits)
Deepen your understanding of criminal behaviour and psychological theories by analysing a range of serious crimes.
Criminal Justice (20 credits)
Explore the criminal justice system, the theories that underpin it and the contemporary debates surrounding it. This module sets the foundation for the Vulnerability and the Victim module in Year 3.
Year 3 (Level 6)
Compulsory modules:
Dissertation (40 credits)
During your Dissertation module, you will undertake an in-depth research investigation into an ethically appropriate topic relating to the legal sector. The topic can be decided by you, subject to a review and approval from your dissertation supervisor.
Criminal Litigation (20 credits)
You will gain an understanding of the principles and processes of criminal litigation, building on your understanding of specific content from the Criminal Law module.
Practical Legal Studies route:
Client Care (20 credits)
Develop and enhance your practical skills and employability, whilst learning about the principles and processes of client care.
Family Law (20 credits)
Learn how to critically evaluate concepts of family law and further your understanding of causes of action that arise in practice.
Civil Litigation (20 credits)
Critically analyse and synthesise principles and processes of civil litigation and develop your knowledge around rules when offering advice to clients. This module is linked to both the Tort Law and the Contract Law modules therefore will build on specific content that you have learnt.
Law and Criminal Studies route:
Policing and Social Control (20 credits)
You will build on your knowledge and skills from the Psychology and Crime module, whilst exploring contemporary content and skills relating to policing and social control.
Crime and Deviance (20 credits)
Explore crime and delinquency, and develop your understanding of the causes of crime and criminology.
Vulnerability and the Victim (20 credits)
Offering an insight into theories relating to victims and vulnerability, this module enables you to understand the role victims play within the justice system and crime prevention.

TYPICAL OFFER
A level: 2 x grade U at A level.
BTEC: BTEC Level 3 National Diploma at PP.
Access: 30 credits at a pass standard.
GCSE: 3 GCSEs at C and above (or the numerical equivalent).
GCSE English: English Language grade 4 or above. Key Skills Level 2, Functional Skills Level 2 and the Certificate in Adult Literacy are accepted in place of GCSEs.
GCSE Maths: Maths grade 4 or above. Key Skills Level 2, Functional Skills Level 2 and the Certificate in Adult Numeracy are accepted in place of GCSEs.

Mature applicants: University Centre Leeds welcomes applications from mature applicants who may not meet the academic criteria but can demonstrate a wealth of experience in their chosen field. Candidates in this category and otherwise are likely to be interviewed to assess their suitability for the course and may be asked to provide a portfolio of evidence to support their application.
