BA (Hons) Policing

This course is perfect for students wishing to become a successful police constable. They’ll gain the key skills, knowledge and cognitive abilities identified as essential and desirable by the College of Policing, as the programme follows the Policing Education Qualifications Framework. The key aim of this award is employability, which is why it has been developed to reflect the changing role, function and policing policy landscape. Work-related learning, research-informed practice and sector-specific skills and knowledge have also been threaded into its design.

About the course

This course allows students to fulfil the current recruitment criteria for police constables, and each module represents the higher levels of knowledge and employment specialisms on offer with the police. After completing initial training, a police constable will be able to specialise in particular units - such as Pupil Protection, Counter Terrorism and Cyber Security - and the modules are built with this in mind.

Some students may not wish to specialise in these areas, but will still learn the core principles, theories and practices for everyday policing. However, all constables have to be aware of counter terrorism strategies to identify radicalisation; procedures to search and seize property relating to cyber crime; and theories and practices surrounding managing conflict and victimology. The knowledge provided is crucial for a police constable as first responders to any incidents.

The course is subject to validation by The Open University.
